Stanley is recalling more than 2.6 million of its popular Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs due to a potential burn hazard. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Thursday, affects mugs where the lid can detach unexpectedly, potentially spilling hot liquids and causing burns. The recall follows reports of 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two in the U.S., linked to the malfunctioning lids.

The affected mugs are stainless steel, double-walled, and feature polypropylene lids. They were sold in 12-, 16-, and 20-ounce sizes, in colors like black, white, and green, with the Stanley logo visible on both the bottom and front of the mug. These mugs were sold across major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Target from June 2016 through December 2024, priced between $20 and $50.

The issue arises from the threads on the mugs’ lids, which can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use. This presents a significant risk when carrying a hot drink, as the hot liquid can spill, potentially leading to burns. In total, Stanley has received 91 reports globally about the lids coming off, with several requiring medical attention.

If you own one of these affected mugs, stop using it immediately and take action. Stanley is offering free replacement lids to all impacted customers. The company will also cover shipping costs.
