Illinois Upsets Nebraska in Overtime Thriller at Memorial Stadium
In a thrilling first ranked matchup at Memorial Stadium in over ten years, No. 24 Illinois (4-0, 1-0) rallied from behind three times to secure a 31-24 overtime victory against No. 22 Nebraska (3-1, 0-1) on Friday night.
The game marked the 400th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium, but Illinois spoiled the celebration, showcasing an impressive offensive performance led by junior quarterback Luke Altmyer. Altmyer completed 21 of 27 passes for 215 yards and threw four touchdown passes, displaying poise against a Nebraska defense that had excelled in its previous games.
Illinois utilized a balanced offensive attack, with three running backs contributing significantly. Kaden Feagin led the ground game, carrying the ball 12 times for 69 yards, helping the Illini keep the Cornhuskers on their toes.
Meanwhile, Nebraska struggled to establish a ground game, finishing with only 77 rushing yards on 31 attempts against a formidable Illinois defense. However, freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola rose to the occasion, delivering the best performance of his young career despite the loss. Raiola completed 23 of 35 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns. His standout receivers, Isaiah Neyor and Jahmal Banks, each had impressive outings—Neyor caught four passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns, while Banks recorded seven receptions for 81 yards.
The matchup showcased the resilience of both teams, but it was Illinois that ultimately emerged victorious, thrilling fans in a memorable night at Memorial Stadium.
